Patient Information Stolen From Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Car

Quick Facts

Abstract
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center recently announced the theft of a document containing patient information. The document, stored in a designer tote that was stolen from an employee's car, contained the names and Social Security numbers of 554 patients. According to officials, the document did not contain any information on medical conditions. The employee had taken the document home for work purposes and left it in the tote when returning to work. Officials believe that the designer tote, and not the document, was the target of the theft. All of the individuals affected have been notified by mail and are being offered one year of credit monitoring at no cost. Wake Forest Baptist's chief privacy officer, J.T. Moser stated that the Medical Center is taking appropriate action against the employee.
