Lost Drive Creates A Security Scare at UTPA

Quick Facts

Abstract
A USB drive reported lost by a University of Texas – Pan American employee was found on the grounds by Pedro Rodriguez, a UTPA groundskeeper. The drive, which contained the names, salaries and Social Security numbers of 1,500 UTPA employees, does not appear to have been accessed by any unauthorized individuals during the week it was thought to be missing. While everything worked out for UTPA this time, the university is taking the matter seriously and is changing university policy to limit the amount of work employees can do at home and forbid employees from taking USB thumb-drives off campus. According to James Langabeer, UTPA vice president for business affairs, “We dodged a bullet, and there won’t be any more bullets.”
