UTEP Students Warned Social Security Numbers Exposed On Tax Form Mailings

Abstract
The University of Texas, El Paso recently notified students after a it discovered letters may have exposed student information. Some of the 15,000 letters, containing the students 1098-T tax form, were folded incorrectly causing the students Social Security Number to be displayed in the envelope window. According the UTEP the error occurred with the folding machine the university uses. UTEP does not know how many of the 15,000 students notified are affected but encouraged them to monitor their credit report.

Abstract

A group of eight to twelve University of Texas, El Paso students illegally gained access to a school computer that contained 4,719 student and faculty Social Security numbers. These students were attempting to find evidence of that a recent Student Government Association (SGA) election was rigged. According to school officials this system contained information pertaining to the 2002 SGA and faculty elections. According to the University, it does not appear that this group of students were trying to do anything illegal with these Social Security numbers. The university is still investigating this incident.
