Quick Facts
The Liberty Coalition worked quickly to notify the University of Tennessee, Martin after it discovered two excel files on a UTM web site containing student information. The files contained the names, Social Security numbers, address, high school information, age, sex, race and other personal information on 41 2004 Tennessee Governor's School for the Agriculture Sciences applicants. The files have been online since at least September 2006. In addition, the web site contained several other files that included writing samples, student applications, and academic competition scores. Some of these files have been online for over a year. According to UTM officials, the files were placed online by Timothy N. Burcham, P.E., Ph.D, who mistakenly thought the files were protected from the general public. UTM staff acted quickly to remove the files from the University web site as well as major search engines. In addition, UTM staff is working to identify the 12 IP address that had accessed this information.
