UTEP Students Warned Social Security Numbers Exposed On Tax Form Mailings

Abstract
The University of Texas, El Paso recently notified students after a it discovered letters may have exposed student information. Some of the 15,000 letters, containing the students 1098-T tax form, were folded incorrectly causing the students Social Security Number to be displayed in the envelope window. According the UTEP the error occurred with the folding machine the university uses. UTEP does not know how many of the 15,000 students notified are affected but encouraged them to monitor their credit report.

Quick Facts
The Liberty Coalition worked quickly to notify the University of Tennessee, Martin after it discovered two excel files on a UTM web site containing student information. The files contained the names, Social Security numbers, address, high school information, age, sex, race and other personal information on 41 2004 Tennessee Governor's School for the Agriculture Sciences applicants. The files have been online since at least September 2006. In addition, the web site contained several other files that included writing samples, student applications, and academic competition scores. Some of these files have been online for over a year. According to UTM officials, the files were placed online by Timothy N. Burcham, P.E., Ph.D, who mistakenly thought the files were protected from the general public. UTM staff acted quickly to remove the files from the University web site as well as major search engines. In addition, UTM staff is working to identify the 12 IP address that had accessed this information.

Abstract
For nine months (Aug 05 - May 06) a computer hacker illegally accessed a University of Tennessee computer that contained employee information. This information included names, address and Social Security numbers of around 36,000 current and former UT employees. It appears that this hacker used the computer to store and transmit motion pictures and UT officials do not believe the employee information was used accessed. The University of Tennessee has setup a toll-free number for any current or former employee that might have questions about the breach. That number is 866-748-1680.
