Abstract
The University of Central Missouri has spent over 500 additional staff hour researching the an identity theft risk to UCM students. UCM was notified by the FBI about the risk after a former UCM student, Joseph Camp, was arrested attempting to sell a file containing 90,000 names, dates of birth and Social Security Numbers to the an FBI Internet Crimes Task force. The FBI worked with UCM's Department of Public Safety and Information Services to review the data. The review showed that only 550 of the 90,000 records had names and Social Security Numbers that matched UCM records. However, when middle initials and dates of birth for the 550 individuals were compared, none of the records matched UCM data according to UCM CIO F. Russell Helm. A review of the UCM ERP System (Banner) uncovered no evidence that it was the source of the data in Camp's position.
Update1
Two former University of Central Missouri students were recently indicted by a federal grand jury in a computer hacking conspiracy against UCM and UCM faculty, staff, students and alumni. According to the seven-count indictment, Joseph A Camp and Daniel J Fowler allegedly conducted a number of illegal activity from Fowler’s room on the UCM campus. Camp and Fowler are accused of the following:
- Gaining unauthorized access to the UCM computer network and downloading personal information on faculty, staff, students and alumni.
- Attempting to transfer money to their student accounts
- Attempting to sell the personal information on 90,000 individuals associated with UCM for $35,000
- Infecting UCM computers with a custom virus that allowed Fowler and Camp to control the computer, capture user keystrokes and download files from the infected computer.
Outside of the conspiracy charge, Fowler and Camp are charged with one count of computer intrusion causing damage, one count of computer intrusion to further a fraud scheme, one count of computer intrusion to obtain information, one count of intercepting electronic communication, and two counts of aggravated identity theft.
