Northwestern University is contacting 4,000 students and applicants over the recent discovery of NU records online. The exposed records involve information stored on a computer in the Life Science's Integrated Graduate Program. The records found online involve individuals that attended to applied to the program between 1991 to 2007. It is not know at this time how these records ended up online nor how long these records were available online.

Northwestern University is alerting students and alumni over possible Identity Theft concerns after a recent laptop theft. The laptop, stolen from an employee in the Financial Aid Office contained the Social Security numbers of NU students and alumni. Since the laptop was stolen from the Chicago Campus, NU officials believe that law and medical students are most affected by this theft. NU has sent letters to individuals urging them to place fraud alerts on their accounts at major credit companies. NU officials were also quick to point out that so far there is no evidence of identity theft or misuse of the stolen information.

Abstract

An unauthorized person not affiliated with Northwestern University illegally accessed nine desktop computers belonging to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. These nine computers contained names and personal information, including some Social Security numbers, on as many as 17,000 individuals. Northwestern officials are urging any students who provided Social Security number information to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid to follow the FTC's identity theft precaution instructions. However, the University does not believe that the unauthorized individual accessed or was even aware of the student information on these computers.
