Abstract
A laptop containing sensitive information on over 93,000 students was stolen from a Denver state college employee's home. The Metropolitan State College employee was using the student information to prepare a grant request and as part of the employee's master's degree thesis. All students who had registered for courses between the fall semester of 1996 and the summer semester of 2005 could be affected by this theft. While the college is notifying students of the potential exposure, a number of individuals are asking why this information was not encrypted as well as why an employee was allowed to use sensitive student information in a thesis.
