Abstract
Black Hills State University recently warned students over the accidental exposure of student’s personal information. A March scholarship announcement posted to the BHSU web site contained the names and Social Security numbers on 56 scholarship recipients. University officials immediately removed the announcement on Tuesday when it became aware of the problem. The university also contacted the 56 students affected by this incident and counseled these students on the warning signs of identity theft and how to monitor their credit reports. According to Corinne Hansen, Director of Communications and Marketing at BHSU, the scholarship announcement was accessed 12 times.
