Abstract
Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital recently announced the theft of a laptop containing patient information. The laptop, belonging to a Baylor physician and stolen from his office at Texas Children's Hospital, contained the names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, dates of service and diagnoses on 1,600 cardiology patients. College and hospital officials are working with local law enforcement who have a suspect in custody. However, the missing laptop has not been recovered. The laptop was password protected but not encrypted. Both the college and hospital are in the process of reviewing the need for encryption on laptops.
