DeVry Campus Ordered To Change Procedures After Identity Theft

Quick Facts

Abstract
The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner recently ordered the Calgary campus of the DeVry Institute of Technology to stop photocopying student identification. The order came after an investigation into a complaint turned up that the institution routinely made multiple photocopies of student identification for use in future loan applications. Investigators discovered that one such copy was used by a criminal to obtain a line of credit at a furniture story in the name of a DeVry student. This student was responsible for the initial complaint which launched the investigation. DeVry was ordered stop making the photocopies, move loan documents to a central location, and install better security.
