Hillsborough Community College is warning 2,000 staff members to monitor their bank accounts after the theft of a laptop containing staff information from a hotel parking lot. The laptop was used in as part of payroll project that involved names, Social Security numbers, bank-routing numbers and retirement information. According to the college spokesperson Ashley Carl, the programmer had deleted the information from the password-protected laptop prior to the theft. In the e-mail sent to staff, HCC vice president of information technology R. Bruce Judd asked that the affected individuals monitor their bank accounts and alert their banks and the college about any suspicious activity.

Abstract
The Liberty Coalition recently announced that it had discovered personal student information on a University of Houston Mathematics Professor's web site in late May 2008. The files, belonging to Marjorie Marks, contained the names, Social Security numbers and grades of 259 students enrolled in the Fall 2005 Math 1310 course. While the university responded quickly to remove the files, search engine caches were not cleared until July 2008.
Virginia Tech Profs Post Student Information Online

In December 2007, the Liberty Coalition notified Virginia Tech about several files discovered on VT web space that contained student information. The files, some dating back to 1998, contained information on 250 VT students including names, 128 full and 111 partial Social Security numbers, class and group participation, class grades and class attendance. Virginia Tech immediately removed the files once notified.
University of Maryland Mailing Labels Contain Student Social Secuity Numbers

Abstract
The University of Maryland is working to alert registered students over mailing labels used to send out parking brochures. These mailing labels, generated by the university's Department of Transportation Services (DOTS), accidentally contained student Social Security numbers along with name and address information. The brochures were sent out on July 1st but the mistake was not noticed until students started calling DOTS on July 8th. This incident affected all student registered for Spring 2008 classes, about 24,000 individuals in total. In an e-mail, DOTS Director David Allen, apologized for the mistake and assures students the department is taking steps to prevent this from happening in the future. In addition, the university is offering affected students free Equifax credit reports at a cost to the university of $23 per student. The university and DOTS have setup a web site - www.transportation.umd.edu/parkingmailer/ - to help answer additional questions.
