UT Dallas Breach May Have Exposed Personal Information

Abstract
The University of Texas, Dallas is working to notify students, faculty and staff after staff discovered a computer breach on July 12. The computer contained names, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and Social Security numbers on 9,100 individuals. The university does not know if the intruder(s) gained access to the Social Security numbers. According to the letter sent to affected individuals, the breach affected: 4,406 students on the Dean List or graduated between 2000 and 2006, 3,892 students that took part in a 2002 Office of Undergraduate Education survey, 88 Facilities Management staff members, and 716 faculty and staff listed on a 2002 space inventory.




UT Dallas Increases The Number Of Individuals Affected By December Breach For The Second Time

Abstract
After completing its investigation into last month's network breach, the University of Texas, Dallas has once again increased the number of records exposed to 35,000 total. This increase of 29,000 includes all individuals from the University's Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science going back to 1993 and all University faculty and staff between 1999 and 2005. UT Dallas Announces Breach Is Wider Then Initially Thought

University of Texas, Dallas officials announced that the recent breach suffered by the institution affected more individuals then was originally reported. After further investigation, it was uncovered that all individuals employed by the university between 1999 and 2005 had their personal information potentially exposed to an unknown attacker. This announcement raises the total number of individuals affected from 5,000 to 6,000.

The University of Texas, Dallas discovered that an unknown individual had gained unauthorized access to at least one UT Dallas computer. This intruder had access to a system(s) containing personal student and staff information including names, phone numbers, addresses and Social Security numbers. UT Dallas staff believe that the attack originated from the Internet, but declined to comment further because of the ongoing investigation.
