Quick Facts

Abstract
The City College of San Francisco is alerting 11,000 past and possibly current student that their identities might be at risk after a recent security incident. CCSF officials announced that it recently discovered that a Web site containing student names and Social Security numbers was available to anyone on the Internet for the past seven years. The unprotected page, created in the summer of 1999, was used by an outside vendor to prepare transcripts but was never removed. "It was a classic case of human error" according to Chancellor Philip Day, Jr. CCSF stopped using SSNs as student identifiers in 2002, but identity theft remains a risk. CCSF officials urge students affected by this incident to place fraud alerts credit reports. CCSF has a web site - www.ccsf.edu/securityalert - and phone number - 800-436-0108 - where students can find more information.
