Three Rivers Community College Investigates Potential Security Breach

Three Rivers Community College recently uncovered a potential breach of computer systems containing personal information. The breach was uncovered during a recent system review. TRCC officials have contacted the individuals that may have been affected including individuals in: Real estate programs between 1997-2009; Life Long Learners programs between 2004-2009; Patient care technicians programs between 2003-2006; Certified nursing assistant programs between 2004-2006; Electric Boat academic programs between 2004-2005; Bridges to Health Care Careers programs between 2007-2008; Photons for Educators programs between 2006-2008; Faculty or staff of the Three Rivers Continuing Education Office between 2004-2009. TRCC has contracted with CSIdentity to offer credit monitoring to those affected.

University of Calgary Warns Patients After Breach at Sunridge Medical Center

Abstract
The University of Calgary recently announced that patient records may have been exposed during a recent breach. The breach, involving a single computer that was compromised by two viruses, contained personal health information of 5,000 patients at University of Calgary's Sunridge Medical Center. While there is no evidence that the viruses, one of which would allow unauthorized access and control of the computer, exposed any information, Dr. Cathy MacLean, head of the department of family medicine, says that it is a concern. The computer in question was used to store copies of faxes, medical legal reports and billing data but did not contain electronic medical records.

Stolen Vanderbilt Computer Contains Student Information

Vanderbilt University recently notified current and former students after a computer contain student information was stolen. The computer, stolen from a professor's office during the weekend of February 6th, contained a grade book with the names, grades and Social Security numbers of 7,174 current and former students. In the notice, Vanderbilt is offering affected individuals one year of identity protection, credit monitoring and credit alerts through Debix. In response to the theft, Vanderbilt University Provost Richard McCarty sent a letter to all deans advising sensitive student information be purged from office computers and not stored in the future.

Computer Theft Prompts Notification of Former Cal State LA Students

California State University Los Angeles recently notified former students following the theft of a computer. The computer, stolen from a mathematics department office, may have contained the names, Social Security numbers and grades on 232 former students between 1999 and 2005. Cal State LA officials do not believe the computer was taken for the information but the warned those affected to notify credit bureaus and law enforcement at the first sign of fraud. In addition, a hotline - 800-883-4029 - has been setup to provide more information to those affected.

Audit Finds Sensitive Illinois State University Information Not Properly Destroyed

A recent audit discovered that Illinois State University is not properly disposing of personal and sensitive information. In a recent report, Illinois Audit General Bill Holland stated auditors found employee Social Security numbers, personal health information and information on ISU credit card accounts in unsecured recycling bins and garbage cans in a number of offices. In addition, the audit points at problems in how sensitive data on old computers is handled. Greg Alt, ISU's Assistant Vice President for Finance and Planning, stated the university is working to improve the way sensitive information is destroyed.
